Pathology images typically come from four areas, each
with their unique challenges:
- Autopsy
- Gross specimens
- Microscopic
- Scanned journal articles & textbooks, scanned film
slides, pictures from analytical devices, and “other” sources
The PAXcam digital imaging system is particularly suited for
use on a microscope or a macrostand, and so lends itself very
well for microscopic and gross pictures from both clinical
pathology and anatomic pathology applications. Autopsies are
generally best suited for hand held work, since it is easier
to bring the camera to the subject area than vice versa. However,
photography of gross specimens right in the morgue can be easily
accomplished with a PAXcam and macro stand setup.
General Workflow
With the camera mounted on the microscope
or macro stand, the subject is introduced into the field
of view. The subject’s
data (accession number, tissue type, etc) is entered into
the PAXit database fields and a case folder assigned for
this work session. Special automated routines for finding
exposure and white balancing make using the PAXcam digital
microscope camera a snap. Upon pressing the “Capture” button,
individual shots are automatically tagged with the prefilled
data, and may be tagged with additional information regarding
specifics of lighting, magnification, etc.
With hand held digital cameras, the
images on the memory card are imported into PAXit case
folders using much the same workflow, giving a place for
them to be archived and databased for future use. Images
from other devices can be imported in like manner, for
example from SEM, radiographic equipment, imports from
CD’s, etc.
Previously shot Kodachrome slides can be easily scanned into
the PAX-it database as well! No need to discard all the boxes
and carousels of past presentations, or the library of unique
cases you have photographed over the years. Simply organize
the newly digitized versions of these past masterpieces within
your PAX-it archive. Film scanners-- and flatbed scanners also--
can be driven directly from the PAX-it TWAIN interface, to
pull new images right into your managed archive.
