Digital Imaging for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology: How Can Digital Images Help Me?

Pathology software for autopsy, gross, microscopy, clinical and radiologyCommon pathology applications for images are made easy with the PAX-it software that is included with every PAXcam camera system.

Some of the most common uses for PAX-it Pathology images are:

Teaching and Tumor Board Presentations

PAX-it provides a direct link to MS-PowerPoint for easy construction of presentations that can be taken anywhere. Annotation tools within PAXit give a quick and easy way to add circles, arrows, & text to images to point out features. Images can also be presented side by side for comparison, or to show a magnification progression, for example. In addition, a slide show function within the PAXit software itself gives a quick and easy way to review images with technicians or prior to construction of a final presentation. Some labs wish to show live microscopic views during conference—this is also possible with the live previews that the PAXcam provides, and can be projected to a screen with a standard digital projector that is common to most conference rooms.

Reporting

PAX-it reporting can be done in a number of ways. Quick prints can be made, with or without a layout that includes database information and notes. Flexible report templates can also be constructed in MS-Word and images sent directly to them (along with database information, notes, annotations, etc) for the construction of a printed report to be appended to a Pathology report or placed back in the PAXit case folder. PAX-it is also odbc compliant, meaning it adheres to Windows standards for communicating with other databases such as LIMS systems, patient record management systems, or A/P systems. Links can be set up so that images in the PAX-it database are automatically pulled into A/P reports with a single click right at the time of image capture (call for more details).

Archiving:

A common goal for captured images is for their safe storage and easy retrieval, especially for images that are used for reference, as standards, or to create a library of interesting cases. PAX-it software pulls images directly from the PAXcam cameras into a managed collection that can be organized according to your lab’s needs. Images are placed in folders that could represent specific cases, or could represent specific types of reference materials. Since images are databased, it is very easy to search through the entire collection for “all liver samples, imaged at 20x, stained with Masson’s stain, and brightfield illumination, showing cirrhosis”. Or to search for that particular specimen you saw 6 months ago, where you forget the case number but can remember the tissue type and a date range for searching. PAX-it makes it an easy task to organize and manage your collection in an efficient and effective manner.

Consultations:

Would it be helpful to have a high resolution image immediately available to send to a colleague for their review? With the PAXcam, the images that are captured are immediately available on your network for a colleague down the hall to pull up and discuss with you. Keep in mind also that with the live preview mode available on the PAXcam, more than one person can be viewing over your shoulder what is happening under the microscope, without the need to move to a multiheaded scope. Have a colleague in a more remote location? PAX-it links directly to MS-Outlook (and other email providers) so that email can be sent with images as attachments, directly from the PAX-it case folders.
